Working Research Question: Given the importance of play in adult lives, how do adults who have lost a sense of play reenter into the "play state of mind" thus opening the door to their best, most genius selves? In other words, given the agreed upon what and why of play - how do we access and apply play to our daily lives?
1. Brown, Stuart. Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination and Invigorates the Soul. New York: Penguin, 2009. Print
SO relevant. This touches on the importance of play in relation to spirit and general well-being. Use to support Plays ability to unlock greatest potential. Author founded National Institute of Play. Published within last 5 years. Current. Concern will take time to read whole book.
2. Henricks, Thomas S. "Play as Self-Realization: Toward a General Theory of Play." American Journal of Play, 6.2 (Winter 2014): 190-213. Web 02 Oct. 2014
Author dwells into why we play. Believes play "can be understood as a project of self-realization." He goes into the history of play and focus on the work of psychologist Michael Ellis who wrote "Why People Play." A book I should get. Relevant because once we establish the why of play, we are then more informed to discuss the how of play. Again, this is a current publication. Current viewpoints on play in the play community are discussed.
3. Gordon, Gwen. "Well Played: The Origins and Future of Playfulness." American Journal of Play, 6.2 (Winter 2014): 234-266. Web 02 Oct. 2014
Source talks about attachment theory and how play is key factor in feelings of well-being. Extensive bibliography. Can email author directly. Interesting. A winter of 2014 article. This conversation is current and happening right now. Yay!
4. The Promise of Play. EP. Stuart Brown and David Kennard. Direct Cinema Limited, 2008. DVD
Gives visuals of play in action, so helpful. Can make own observations between the lines of the narrator. Interviews of leading contributors to Play topic. Great "bread crumb" trail to research more sources. Will need to listen carefully to accurately quote.
5. Shen, Xiangyou Sharon, Garry Chick, and Harry Zinn. "Validating the Adult Playfulness Trait Scale (APTS) - An Examination of Personality." American Journal of Play, 6.3 (Spring 2014): 234-266. Web 02 Oct. 2014
Source gives concrete data in forms of flow charts, graphs... Can use
the raw collected data as a primary source and perhaps make my own
observations. APTS is a very recent tool for measuring an individual ability to play. Can help to lead me to how to get increase an individuals APTS ability by defining what exactly that is. Similar article published by same authors in Journal of Leisure Research; 2014; 26.1 pp. 58-83
