10/14 - In-Class Lab - Incorporating Sources Effectively

1)      TWO SENTENCE CITATION CONSTRUCTION:
Stuart Brown, doctor of psychiatry, as well as the founder of National Institute for Play is a leading voice in the Play psychology and research community.  In his book, “Play:  How it shapes the Brain, opens the imagination, and invigorates the Soul” he discusses how top engineering schools and companies are having a hard time finding new hires with equivalent problem solving skills as their seniors.  His research with JPL hiring managers found that “unlike their elders, the young engineers couldn’t spot the key flaw in one of the complex systems they were working on, toss the problem around, break it down, pick it apart, tease out its critical element, and rearrange them in innovative ways that led to a solution” (10).  He attributes this to a growing trend of lack of physical play with object in current childhood.  “They found that in their youth, their older, problem-solving employees had taken apart clocks to see how they worked, or made soap box derby racer, or built hi-fi stereos, or fixed appliances” (11).

2)  TWO PARAGRAPH CITATION CONSTRUCTION:
It is critical that we incorporate a strong sense of object oriented problem solving play into our early educational system.  As Thomas S. Henricks, author of “Play as Human Expression” states in his article “Play as Self Realization: Towards a General Theory of Play” in the American Journal of Play, 2014, that “Play as a form of problem solving proves central to the work of some of the great educational reformers” (193).”
Not only is play crucial to developing problem solving skills applicable to adult corporate life, play also plays a major part in happy successful relationships.  As Gwen Gordon, renown play coach, and producer of the upcoming documentary “SERIOUSLY! The future depends on play” notes in her article “Well Played:  The Origins and Future of Playfulness” published in 2014 in the American Journal of Play, “Social disconnection and isolation for individuals of all ages marks one of the biggest stressors causing pathology and disease” (Schore qtd. in 236).  She later goes on to say,Whatever potential we may have when we come into the world, the socio-emotional environment of our earliest relationships form the soil in which this potential either blossoms or withers” (238).
